Mountain Top is a great place to do business! It's conveniently located to several major highways, including the Pennsylvania Turnpike, I-80 and I-81. In addition, State Route 309 forms the main highway in Mountain Top (Mountain Boulevard).

Mountain Blvd. is the main artery where many of the retail businesses are located. It's been growing rapidly, with several new businesses, restaurants and offices added in the last few years. Many people who live in and around Mountain Top prefer not to go "off the mountain" and would rather do their shopping here. The thriving business climate makes it possible for residents to buy and do just about anything they need, right here in town.

Mountaintop is located southeast of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Metropolitan area. It has a lot of the benefits that those cities offer, in an open, country atmosphere. It is also at the western edge of the Pocono Mountains, and the region offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor recreation.

The town of Mountain Top actually occupies parts of five different townships and one municipality: Fairview, Wright, Rice and Dorrance Townships and Nuangola Borough. The school district also includes Slocum Township, West Penn Lake and White Haven.

It is served by the Crestwood School District that encompasses some 125 sq. mi. The public schools include Rice Elementary, Fairview Elementary, Crestwood Middle School and Crestwood High School.

One word or two? There is a lot of debate as to whether "Mountaintop" or "Mountain Top" is correct. The US Postal Service uses two words, as does the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. But businesses and local residents use both forms.

Mountain Top is located at 41°8'17" North, 75°55'54" West (41.138082, -75.931634). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 178.7 km² (69.0 mi²). 176.6 km² (68.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.2 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.22% water.

As of the census of 2000, there are 15,269 people, 5,556 households, and 4,394 families residing in the town. The population density is 86.5/km˛ (224.0/mi˛). There are 5,774 housing units at an average density of 32.7/km˛ (84.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 97.02% White, 0.54% African American, 0.03% Native American, 1.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,556 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% are non-families. 18.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.10. In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.9 males. The median income for a household in the town is $51,655, and the median income for a family is $58,588. Males have a median income of $41,271 versus $26,346 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,480. 3.4% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 3.7% are under the age of 18 and 5.4% are 65 or older.

Marian Sutherland Kirby Library

The Marian Sutherland Kirby Library, located at 35 Kirby Avenue in Mountain Top, is a publicly-funded community resource. In addition to its role as a lending library, the Kirby plans many activities throughout the year, from story time and craft activities for children to providing internet access, sponsoring classes, and hosting sales and events for fund raising.

As a member of the Luzerne County and state library system, the Kirby library can also grant you access to virtually any public library in the state. If there's a book, CD or video that you want that Kirby doesn't have - they can probably get it for you from some other public library as long as you're a card-carrying member of the system.

Crestwood School District

According to schools-data.com, Crestwood High School has a graduation rate of over 95%. More than 80% of its graduates go on to pursue a college education.

The Crestwood School District includes Crestwood High School, Crestwood Middle School, Fairview Elementary School and Rice Elementary School. In addition, St. Jude School, a parochial school associated with St. Jude Parish Roman Catholic Church, is within the school district, including grades K-8.
